Welcome to our Club!

Rum & Cigars Monthly Digest

Rum and Cigars has officially launched with amazing engagement of a great enthusiast community.

by Carlos Artilez on February 22nd, 2023

Mission Completed! This summarizes our club's inaugural tasting event at the exclusive DYMON Wine Cellars. The theme was Rum Awareness: opening our founding members to the world of rum making, process and experiences.

Rums can be distilled and aged anywhere in the world, but not all rums are created equal. From using sugar cane juice or molasses as the base, to pot or column still distillation, to maturation on bourbon oak or french oak casks. There are many ways a rum can provide a great unique experience–a similar value proposition to that of any prestigious whiskey. Our members and guests, all of whom filled every available seat, were able to immerse themselves into this world as they gained awareness of the different variables in rum-making, origins, and experiences!

Rum Tasting Vol. 1: Rum Awareness

by Carlos Artilez on February 22nd, 2023

Our staff carefully curated a selection of 3 rums, covering the main categories of the rum industry in its current state:

  1. Plantation XO 20th Anniversary (40% Alcohol/Vol, mainly from Barbados, by Plantation Rums, LCBO link),

  2. Appleton Estate 12 Year Old Rare (43% Alcohol/Vol, from Jamaica, by Appleton Estate, LCBO link),

  3. and Ron Zacapa 23 Centenario (40% Alcohol/Vol, from Guatemala, by Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala, LCBO link)

These represent, respectively, the French-style of rum making (or Rhum Agricole, as it is sometimes referred to), the English-style, and the Spanish-style (aka Ron, as the spanish translation of Rum).

The engagement was amazing! Our speaker, Carlos Artilez–one of our club's staff members and founder–opened the event with a brief historic recap and covered the rum's distillation and maturation processes. Throughout this presentation, our attendees tasted our selection and asked great questions. This allowed everyone to gain awareness of the state of the industry, while opening their senses to fruitiness of the rhum agricole, the bold and oaky notes of the english Caribbean rum, and the smoothness of the spanish ron.

As pictures communicate more than words, follow the link below for more photos of our event, and be sure to follow us on social media (LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook) for even more content and events! Actually, this event is only the first of what will become a monthly cadence, where our staff will aim at engaging our members and guests with more knowledge and curated products in the spirits and cigar industries.

Did you know that one year of tropical aging in the Caribbean is the equivalent of 3 years aging in a cooler climate such as Scotland? Aging or Maturation is a critical process for spirits; a step where Rum master blenders see lots of opportunities to craft a unique experience. Please consider joining us at our next rum tasting event, where we'll explore the impact of aging in our first vertical tasting of the year!
